OMG they just don’t learn do they…..
Jul 31, 2011 @ 13:22:42
That reads like something out of The Onion.
Jul 31, 2011 @ 13:23:45
Jul 31, 2011 @ 13:23:47
Seems like a satirical article written by The Onion. I seriously doubt it’s real. Where did you find it?
Jul 31, 2011 @ 13:26:08
Their behavior is so unconstitution, but also SO bizarre, that I hope all of you will force the issue and give them random drug tests…..
Jul 31, 2011 @ 13:26:11
That… sounds like something from the Onion. Are you sure it’s not a parody?

This is satire. Looks like it came from “the scallion” a satirical column here:
Jul 31, 2011 @ 13:27:19
PLEASE tell me this is from the Onion. Who would tell anyone that a child’s sidewalk chalk art “sucked”? That was a bit of a tip-off.
Jul 31, 2011 @ 13:27:21
Found the original article: http://www.redthreadmagazine.com/etcetera/the-scallion/oak-park-girl-7-faces-jail-time-over-sidewalk-art/
It’s a satire. 🙂 I like it.
Jul 31, 2011 @ 13:28:01
This is absolutely ridiculous. First, I don’t think they actually arrested a 7 year old, she is a minor and that is not even possible. Second, they would have just had to give a warning to the parents and they could have washed it off, if it actually does violate city code, which I doubt it. If any of these charges are true, I would be the first to start an art group for the soul purpose of side walk chalking all sidewalks in the city. Let’s do this.
Jul 31, 2011 @ 13:28:08
All the overworked, underpaid people out there, and the employees of Oak Park obviously have too much time on THEY’RE hands.
Another argument the mother could use: The best source of Vitamin D is still sunlight. Therefore, she’s promoting good health in her growing child.
Jul 31, 2011 @ 13:28:33
Yes, Kantal113, it’s too absurd. and the neighbor quote? last name? I mean, really!

Jul 31, 2011 @ 13:28:39
Goodness gracious me, Oak Park “public servants” have some real “size of member” issues. Until those are cleared up, some folks need to take a leave of absence.
Jul 31, 2011 @ 13:29:03
It’s a satirical piece. The original source:
Jul 31, 2011 @ 13:29:32
Sorry, “too much time on THEIR hands” My bad!
Jul 31, 2011 @ 13:30:06
I pray it isn’t real. But if it is, please:
Send them to your lawyer. And besides……What 7 year old draws like an artist?!? That neighbor lady needs a reality check.
Jul 31, 2011 @ 13:30:37
Oh, good! That was seriously kinda scary at first. Understandable, though, with the original issue going as far as it did.
Jul 31, 2011 @ 13:30:48
time to start another facebook page
Jul 31, 2011 @ 13:30:52
Hey, has anyone sent this information to Crayola? And other producers of Sidewalk Chalk? I wonder how the marketing teams (and all those tv commercials) are going to think about this. Sidewalk Chalk is designed to be used on the sidewalk. That’s for what it is marketed. That’s what the producers of Sidewalk Chalk tell us to do with it. Let kids be kids. That’s how we grow up to be intelligent, productive adults.
What’s happening in our country? This is right up there with the kids fined for a lemonade stand. . . or the Girl Scout arrested for selling Girl Scout cookies. They already took away many of the “kid-type” jobs. You have to have a driver’s license to deliver newspapers, you have to have a business license to mow the neighbor’s lawn, you have to be a registered daycare provider to babysit.
God please help our world!
Jul 31, 2011 @ 13:31:06
agree, I have heard the pony joke before and Abby Anger? really? don’t think this is real.
Jul 31, 2011 @ 13:33:06
I found the source. It’s a satirical piece from “Red Thread Magazine.”
Erica wins $5. 🙂
Jul 31, 2011 @ 13:33:10
I found this while searching to see if it was real or not.
“This article is from Red Thread‘s “Scallion” department; it is a satire”
Jul 31, 2011 @ 13:33:38
It says at the end that it is a satire.
Jul 31, 2011 @ 13:34:12
This would be funny if it weren’t so sad. When I googled this to see if I could find anything else about it on the fabulous intrawebs, I found that the “other Oak Park” (CA) actually holds an annual side-walk chalk drawing contest. Does your fair hamlet need tourist trade so badly that they are willing to punish innocent mothers and children for a few drive-by oglings? *Sigh*
Jul 31, 2011 @ 13:34:33
Okay. I was being quiet and not contacting Oak Park cause I don’t live there and I honestly didn’t want to create trouble for you, Julie. But this is just pissing me off. Going after a second grader for drawing chalk pictures on the sidewalk? And who is that old neighbor criticizing the drawings of a child? The name of the lady fits her. Abby Anger. I’m assuming that’s her real name and not made up. Some people die before they are even in the grave and she sounds like one of those people.
Jul 31, 2011 @ 13:35:24
When I read it, my first thought was it’s someones made up thing. l guess I was write. You could tell by the picture and some of the quotes and names. At least I hope that’s the way it is!
Jul 31, 2011 @ 13:36:52
Let’s see how far we can take this one!
Jul 31, 2011 @ 13:38:59
lol. And I had already created a new facebook page for the cause! lmao. April fools day in July!
Jul 31, 2011 @ 13:48:27
Howz about the spelling in the survey? How smart does someone have to be to know how to spell “allowed”?
Jul 31, 2011 @ 14:07:27
This is a joke, clearly. Still, given the history of your town, it wasn’t that big-a-stretch to see it as possible. Good for a laugh, anyway.
Jul 31, 2011 @ 14:07:42
Seriously? The name Abby Anger wasn’t enough of a tip off? I thought it was a great post, but I knew pretty quickly that it was a satire.
Jul 31, 2011 @ 14:16:48
This has ACTUALLY happened in NYC. well, not with a little girl, but for chalk on the street. http://www.wired.com/culture/lifestyle/news/2004/08/64782

Don’t worry something similar will happen for real soon. Skunks do not change their stripes.
Jul 31, 2011 @ 14:27:06
That’s the beauty of the Onion. The line between satire and reality is a fine line indeed.
Jul 31, 2011 @ 14:36:17
On found the article for the 7 year old sidewalk artist on the Red Thread webpage. At the end it had the following…
Editor’s Note: This article is from Red Thread‘s “Scallion” department; it is a satire.
(I’ve been duped many a time! Out here in the San Francisco Bay Area we have a paper called The Onion that only prints satire – I have a feeling that’s the inspiration for Red Thread’s “Scallion” department.)

FYI Minors can be and are arrested. Seven years old is about the youngest that I have read of being arrested. Usually when a school calls the PD about a misbehaving student.
Jul 31, 2011 @ 14:53:59
This is first class BS! Police state corrupted Gov. Y’all need to stand up and forcefully oust these idiot’s and ignorant council members and police!!!!! Y’all need to stand up!!!

Jul 31, 2011 @ 14:59:22
LOVE the complainant’s surname Mrs. ANGER!!!!! !!
Jul 31, 2011 @ 15:19:11
Some dope in my planned unit development, ok the president, commented that she wasn’t going to allow sidewalk chalk drawings because they lead to graffiti in later life. I thought when we grew up we developed common sense. Guess not….
Jul 31, 2011 @ 15:22:37
Please, Please…. isn’t it time for a recall election in Oak Park? Get rid of them all in one fell swoop, and fire all the bureaucrats once the new mayor and city council is seated. Enough already…..

While this story from the Onion was meant to be satorical, it is based in fact. In 2007, abc news reported on a little girl and a chalk flower…..http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/video?id=3726223
sad, no, I mean really sad…
Jul 31, 2011 @ 16:14:39
Don’t think that all that is satire, that it isn’t true (to some degree) somewhere. http://www.theage.com.au/victoria/toddlers-breaching-graffiti-act-with-chalk-drawing-outside-cafe-20110323-1c6cx.html

If I may offer some advice, I see on the map that you are in a suburb of Detroit, a dying city. Perhaps it’s time to move.
I use my own life to illustrate my point. I moved to Southern California (from Seattle) in 1969 at age 14. I became a Valley Boy. So Cal was pretty cool in those days. But since that part of America is being reabsorbed by its former owners, Mexico, one house at a time, over the decades it disintegrated and became worse and worse. Not to mention that average working folks can’t afford to buy a house there…..
I finally made the big break 3 years ago and moved to Ohio. Wow!! I feel like I have escaped from North Korea! States like California and Michigan (Illinois, etc) are POLICE STATES. States under too much stress tend to turn their attention to soft targets, like you. They are incapable of dealing with their real problems.
I think if you could relocate to a Free State, you could find the happiness of not having to fight with the local government all the time. And it would be better for your kids.
I know, that’s hard to think about, but the biggest mistake of my life (and that’s saying a lot, I have made some big ones) was in staying in the Police State of California way way too long. To borrow from lyrics of CSNY, “shoulda been gone long ago”…
“…. tin soldiers and Nixon’s coming……”
Jul 31, 2011 @ 17:45:28
Oh… you lied to me.
If you are going to be a Crusader against government run amok, you really need to get the facts straight before you post things. When you just post stuff off the net, you destroy your own credibility.
Jul 31, 2011 @ 17:53:15
You made me laugh as some people also consider Ohio a police state. I guess all things are relative. I have lived in both Michigan and California and I don’t think there is a question about where on the scale they are.
Jul 31, 2011 @ 19:03:45
you are absolutely correct. i humbly fall on my sword 😦
Jul 31, 2011 @ 20:40:00
Ooops…It was believable because of what you went through…lol…Still I got a laugh out of it…
Jul 31, 2011 @ 21:34:07
So glad it was simply satire. Wondered about the comments on how bad the art was! Hope you’re enjoying the garden. We’re drying up over here in Iowa. Need some rain!

Do they have guard post and barbed wire around your town???? Sounds like the city mayor and police have WAY to much time on there hands. Small towns can be a nice place to like, but with the wronf people in charge they can turn the town into a Gulag. good luck, Dave (the man) Falls

It sounds a whole lot like Berlin in 1939. Gestapo walking around trying to gain kudos from the Party leaders for being exceedingly diligent with their observations for the Government. Seems history does repeat itself, and more often than we want to believe, AND in ways we would rather avoid. It seems that Oak Park is the worst place in America to live, I swear. Are the officials in Oak Park recruited from some asylum somewhere? Good God man, they seem to be completely enamored with screwing with the population, I mean… TO a LOT of OFFICIALS, the citizens are the enemy, as a cop. Just damnit man, WTF is WRONG WITH THEM? You need to get on your soapbox Julie darling, and get these idiots voted out! Do not relent on those you KNOW must be gone, be as relentless as they are, EVERY TIME one of them does one of these witch hunts, Pick-on-the-gardener, or Arrest a 7 year old for coloring in sidewalks that are cracked and broken and unsightly all by themselves, EXPOSE THEM! We promise, we WILL help you clean out the city government of all that corruption. The guy who issued the summons must feel like a creep, compared to some of the stuff he has done with public assets on the side, what a sleezeball. I am angry too, but I believe Ms. Anger was the “caller.” She sounds like she would will a landslide if she ran for city government, she’s a CREEP too! ( boy you got ’em in Oak Park eh?)
Aug 01, 2011 @ 08:38:47
THAT”S What I’d said if it WAS real…
Aug 01, 2011 @ 08:43:05
@tempwayfarer… SO tell me…. Just HOW are all those Mexicans buying all those houses that no-one can afford? You insinuate they are poor and that you can’t afford a house, so you are MORE poor than them, the prices aren’t that high, or you have all your facts screwed-up?
Aug 01, 2011 @ 14:47:49
ya- that was the truly frightening part, wasn’t it?????
Aug 01, 2011 @ 14:53:38
Hey, if you REALLY (really) do stop and check before sharing from hence forth, or even half the time… hooray!!!! 🙂
When your story first graced my screen, I googled ’round and searched for “news” to make sure it was legit and as stooooopid as it sounded… and sadly, same for the poor lady in Atlanta who really *did* get arrested when her kid got run over by a drunk driver… but yea, only ’cause I’d learned the “check first!” lesson the hard way first…

I could not find your email address anywhere so I am contacting you here.
You might find this story hits close to home since you were headed in the direction of a jury trial. A man in FL, Mark Schmidter, was handing out pamphlets outside of a courthouse in FL to educated prospective jurors of their duties and responsibilities. Are you familiar with FIJA? http://fija.org/
Any anyone that is ever on trial owes this man and FIJA a thank you.
The judge in that area however charged him with a felony for exercising his first amendment rights and he faces 5 months in jail and a felony for doing what every American should do. (educate your fellow citizens.)
He needs our help and I am trying to get contact info for him.

Get off the sword. Last I checked, humans were not even supposed to be perfect. You made a mistake, you got duped, you had your chance to be the one born every min. That is NOT the same as a lie. So, get off the sword and let he who has committed no wrong throw the rock.

Just last week I was at a friends home. She is a new homeowner and a single mother of two and as she was proudly showing me her place I couldn’t help notice the chalk work of her youngest daughter on the sidewalk near her garage. I stopped and fought back tears as I remembered doing this myself many, many years ago and my own daughter doing this as well making hop scotches on the sidewalk and the rain washing it away and her patiently waiting for the sun to come out so she could redo it. The innocence of it all touched my heart and I realized while my daughter is now long grown up, it’s the simple memories of things like this that make life worth living. Often, it’s the adults with no happy memories of things like this that are the ones taking issue. It’s a sad commentary of how screwed up we can become when we forget to take time to smell the roses, so to speak. The city should embrace the normalcy of something so innocent and seriously dedicate their time doing something more constructive in the future and leave 7 year old girls to create memories that will last a lifetime for their families.
